The Northern Forest is a place aparta
rare oasis of green in the densely populated Northeast.
It
is a place of wind-swept mountains and rolling hills; icy lakes
and rushing rivers; moose, bear, beaver and loon. And, of course,
woods: vast swaths of maple, beech, birch, spruce and balsam fir.
The
Northern Forest is also defined by its people, more than one million,
living in small towns where human experience is tightly interwoven
with the forested landscape.
Yet,
across this wonderful landscape, threats are lurking. Damaging
lakeshore development, compromised water quality, devastated mountain
vistas, and economic troubles are on the rise.
Name
just about any place that you love in the Northern ForestMoosehead
and the Rangeley Lakes of Maine, the Mahoosuc and White Mountains
of New Hampshire, Vermont's Northeast Kingdom and Worcester Range,
Lake George and the Oswegatchie River in New Yorkand you
can be sure it's facing the growing onslaught of poorly-planned
development and damaging forest management.
The
Northern Forest Alliance needs your help to fight these threats
and to create a more hopeful future for the land and people of
this magnificent region. The Alliance has established a successful
track record in the past 15 years, bringing together a broad range
communities, government agencies, and organizations, and building
common cause behind a wide range of conservation and sustainable
economic development initiatives.
