Maine Projects Director

The Northern Forest Alliance is a 18-year old coalition of 51 conservation, recreation, and forestry organizations united in their commitment to protect and enhance the natural and human communities of the Northern Forest. The Alliance's priorities include conserving wildlands, promoting well-managed forests and supporting strong, diverse local economies that support vibrant communities.
Summary Description:
The Maine Projects Director is primarily responsible for advancing the Alliance's local, state, and federal initiatives in Maine and coordinating the activities of the Maine Caucus of the Northern Forest Alliance. The Maine Projects Director will work under direction of the Executive Director and in close cooperation with the Maine Caucus of the Alliance.
Responsibilities:
- Develop strong working relationships with opinion leaders in local communities, non-traditional allies such as the hunting, angling and motorized recreation communities, and select officials within state and federal government
- Maintain and enhance Alliance member group support for and engagement in Alliance initiatives.
- Assist Executive Director fundraising efforts as needed.
- Maintain and enhance a Maine-based activist data base.
- Work with Maine Caucus to develop an annual work plan based on overall NFA Campaign Plan.
- Coordinate Maine Caucus outreach in selected northern Maine communities, including making presentations to public audiences, conducting informal "kitchen table" discussions, and developing one-on-one relationships in order to develop supporters and activists for Alliance Initiatives.
- Play a leadership role in initiating, building and maintaining collaborative partnerships with other organizations.
- Develop and coordinate Alliance media contacts in Maine.
- Prepare monthly activity reports.
- Prepare for and participate in Maine Caucus meetings and other special events and meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated ability to act strategically and creatively to advance a landscape-level campaign.
- Highly motivated self-starter with a proven ability to manage multiple demands and deadlines and work independently.
- Proven ability to work constructively with a wide range of interests including rural community leaders, industrial forestry interests, hunters, trappers, and anglers, tribal leaders, local elected officials, local, state, and federal land managers and conservation organizations.
- Must be able to lead and work in a team environment.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills, ability to write and speak concisely and persuasively.
- Bachelor's degree or comparable work experience in natural resource management or related field.
- Ability to travel frequently and perform some evening and weekend work.
- At least three years of outreach and organizing experience in the environmental field.
- Familiarity with Maine's Northern Forest region, its people and their values.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, Power Point, and Access.
Salary and Benefits:
$25,000 - $35,000 per year depending upon experience plus excellent benefits. This is a grant funded position for an initial 12 months with the possibility of continuation depending upon available funding.
Location:
The preferred location for this position is Augusta, Maine.
